Ann Stelling and Tommy Maloney are not only a married couple but have established a “blended family” when they married in 2012. The couple walks the talk trying to be their version of the “Brady Bunch” and Tommy jokes “that we do it without an ‘Alice’.” They consult, speak, and write about this subject to help serve not only blended families but parents who could use help as well by adding new tools in their parenting tool boxes.
The duo first met while Ann was the Program Manger of “Building Healthy Marriages” a federal grant, and Tommy was building his own speaking business around being a single dad. Their paths crossed in Denver, Colorado at a monthly meeting of the Colorado Responsible Fatherhood Council where they struck up conversations about co-parenting and from there a mutual friendship ensued. They discovered they have a common passion to serve the parents who at times are just tossing their arms up in surrender. Ann and Tommy simply want to help parents no matter if it is a blended family or not.
Strong Community Ties
Tommy plays a huge part in the online community, and he contributes to several online magazines including Modern Gladiator, ourmomspot and The Good Men Project. Tommy doesn’t write in the perspective of being just a dad or a bonus dad, rather he writes as someone who experienced the pain of divorce first hand as a child and then a parent.
Ann is widely known in their local community as someone who lives to serve. She was the manager of the Million-dollar grant of Building Healthy Marriage Program. Ann has spoken at several conferences on how to build health marriages but is also a proponent of the pro fatherhood campaigns. When Ann is not doing her “day job” she is a mom to her two girls Betsy 18 and Becca 13.
“We don’t claim to walk in your shoes, but we have had similar experiences.” Today, they are trying to coin the word “bonus” when it comes to describing the family dynamics verses the word “step” because they both feel that this is not only a negative word but outdated.
